How many times have you gone out to play a match and the only thing you think or care about is "winning" or "losing?" This can set you up for failure. Everyone will lose from time to time. This worrying about losing can be very negative!
Instead of "Winning or Losing," lets say "Winning or Learning." If you can see losing as a teachable moment or a learning lesson, you will be much better off. Next time you lose and come off the court you might be having some of these thoughts.
- I started off nervous and played poorly in the first set, but I calmed down and played "my game" in the second set.
- I changed a losing game!
- I started off playing aggressively, but was making all the errors. Then I settled down and minimized my errors.
- I started changing my pace, my shot selection and my height over the net.
- Next time I play this player I will avoid his or her strength, (forehand for example).
- Next time I'll keep more balls in the court and force him or her to make more unforced errors.
- Next time I'll calm down and pace myself.
If you can turn losing into learning you will play better and feel better. Turning a negative "losing" into a positive "learning" will greatly improve your tennis under the pressure of matches, leagues and tournaments.
Please try this! What do you have to lose?
Good luck on the Courts!
