Sunday's rainshowers lifted just in time for the 4 P.M. start of Monday
play. In action on Stadium Court, veteran Thomas Johansson faced Santiago Giraldo, age 19, from Colombia, resuming their rain-interrupted match of Sunday.
Johansson, now 31, looked as trim and athletic as ever. The South American youth
showed some dazzling ground strokes, striking winners off both wings,
especially from the forehand side, often with little forewarning. Johansson's best
asset on this day was in his precision placing of his first serve. The heat and
humidity seemed to wear down the younger player, who finally yielded in three
sets. It was a hard-earned win for Thomas, 76 67 64.
