Paris-born Gael Monfils, 20, showed his
impressive
talents in narrowly surviving strong opposition by German left-hander
Michael
Berrer, 26. Monfils made a large impression in world tennis two years ago
but
was then troubled by injuries in 2006. On this date he showed flashes of
magnificence, both in power serving and stroking and also in his quickness
and
full-court usage. He seems effortless and superbly limber in his movement.
There
was much inconsistency in his play, however, and his inclination to play
from
well behind baseline invited net attack by Berrer--a strong attacker. If
Monfils seemed to caress the ball, even when hitting out, Berrer wielded a
bludgeon.
The match was played under broiling afternoon sun, probably improving the
chances of the younger and lighter player, Monfils. The French youth won
in three
tough sets.
