Impressive on this date was the performance of Gael Monfils,
20, who had shown occasional brilliance in defeating Berrer the day before. Now,
against Marat Safin, Monfils sustained an extremely high level from start to
finish, behind sustained serving velocities higher than Isner's, reaching well
into the 140's. Monfils's stroking seldom retreated into defensiveness, and,
also unlike on Thursday, there were no spells of excessive error-making. Most
remarkable was the court mobility of the Paris-born athlete, who turned several
critical situations into point-winners by his agility and speed. Safin played
reasonably well, but he was beaten both in his weight of shot and in its
consistency as well as in mobility.
