The Virtues of Patience
John Mills, USPTA |
Mistake:
Before your opponent is ready to receive, you are already hitting your first serve. After faulting on your first, you barely give your opponent time to receive. You are playing too fast.
Solution:
As a courtesy and good etiquette, always give your opponent time to receive. Do not try to use gamesmanship to win!
Mistake:
You fault on your first serve -- the ball hits the net and rolls back into your playing court. You serve the second ball without clearing it.
Solution:
Always take the time to clear the court of all balls which might disrupt your concentration and may pose a safety hazard.
Mistake:
On your change over between odd number games, you do not take your allotted break. You do not sit down or drink water, etc. You immediately walk to the opposite side and stand waiting for your opponent to get up and play. Or you split sets with an optional ten minute break and you do not take it.
Solution:
Always take the allotted time breaks. The game demands patience. Take the break to calm down and let your body recover mentally and physically.
In general, slow down. Do not practice gamesmanship. The game demands patience. And remember, the typical rally lasts from two to four hits. So, what's the hurry? It is a thinking game. You will lose a lot of practice partners playing too fast.
