I have followed with interest the thread on "ratings." I am amazed that
someone hasn't pointed out that the NTRP is a self rating system. Official
verifications are just that, verification of your self rating. Players are
ultimately responsible for their own rating.
I recall a comment about how they give you the rating you ask for, which
as a verifier in the Southern section I hear all the time. Again, this is a
misunderstanding of the NTRP system. By the time they get to a verification
clinic, at least 80% of all players know what their rating is. All we do as
verifiers is verify that you are not playing too low.
I can't speak for what, by the discussions, appears to be individual club
ratings, but here you can't just go to a local pro and "get a rating." You
must attend an official verification clinic with verifiers from all over the
state involved. Verifiers must attend a workshop every year where we mainly
get on the same page with our role models.
