[tennisbiz] Re: Ball Machine Drills
Reference Ball Machine Drills:
There are many drills for ball machines and you will probably receive some of
them from other members. One thing that might not be mentioned is the use of
trainers/targets with the machine. They sell (and we built) a trainer out of
PVC. It is a 3 foot square, the bottom of which is level with the top of the
net at the side line.
You set it up for down the line returns. The ball machine hits cross court
to the player standing in the middle of the court. The player moves to the
side line and hits the return down the line through the square opening. If
you want to get fancy, you can hang crepe paper streamers from the top of the
square. The kids enjoy it and after a while, they start to groove their
groundies. You can also put the trainer in the middle of the court and
require them to hit topspin over it and keep the ball in the court. Another
aid uses plastic targets on the court on the same side of the net as the
machine. You can offer the kids a prize if they can hit them (take your pick
on the type of stroke that you want to work on--volleys, approach, etc.).
