I prefer to postpone teaching the slice backhand to later stages, when
topspin and flat are the basis to this player's game. The minute you
teach slice, they never want to try anything else again. It is so
convenient and defensive, and you can be late for your stroke.
About the serve, start with the spin serve behind the service line,
until your player gets used to the toss, grip and motion.
