[tennisbiz] Re: Tennis for physically handicapped
Bob,
Susan Edelstein (edelstein_at_usta.com) at the USTA White Plains office heads
the special populations group which services the groups you mention. The
USTA also has adapted curriculum/coaching instructions for individuals
with special physical needs from hearing impairments, muscular dystrophy,
to wheelchair athletes as well as those with mental challenges - there's a
section in the back of the USTA school's curriculum (or it might be the
USTA's Tennis 1-2-3 instructional materials - Susan will know for sure).
As well Susan was very helpful in directing me to coaches/instructors in
my area that had wheelchair tennis clinics and made me aware of
tournaments for players with special needs. Susan also directed me to a
couple of videos on wheelchair tennis that reviewed rules, grips,
stroke production all adapted for quad- and paraplegics. The athletes
were amazing!
Hope this helps,
Jani Pallis
