<x-charset iso-8859-1>Scott Stacey,
To teach the swinging volley is purely preference. I was never taught the
swinging volley when I took lessons for 10 years, nor have I ever taught it
when I gave lessons. Regardless of the fact, I will use it once is a while
to put a ball away. I am a serve and volley player, so I am very
comfortable hitting a traditional volley. However, if my opponent hits a
floater and I can't get as close to the net as I would like and they are
starting to recover, I will take it out of the air with a swinging topspin
shot. This allows me to cut down their recovery time and be a little more
aggressive. I probably hit 1 topspin volley every other match. If used
wisely, I think it can be a very smart and effective shot.
So teach it or not, it is not hard to learn. If you play it smart and use
it only when it will truly benefit you than by all means, I am all for it.
If you try to hit every volley with a swinging volley, then I think there is
a problem. :)
Good Luck on the Court!!!
