About half the books on tennis include a discussion related to this
subject--Sometimes called strategy or tactics, sometimes related to mental
toughness. I know of several books that discuss the specific idea of
thinking on court.
Total Tennis, The Mind-Body Method, M. Barrie Richmond, MD, Macmillan Pub
Co., NY, 1980, p 48 (Somewhat dated, but goes into detail on mental aspects).
Use Your Head in Tennis, Bob Harman, Thomas Y. Crowell Co., NY, 1974 (Another
dated reference but has a forward by Jack Kramer).
The above references encourage thinking on court. I include a third
reference for balance. It discourages conscious thinking and recommends
using unconscious mental techniques. It is a controversial book and has
fallen into disrepute with many current tennis experts. Still, it has some
ideas worthy of evaluation.
The Inner Game of Tennis, Timothy Gallwey, Random House, NY, 1974.
