[tennisbiz] Re: Service Toss
Phil,
I agree and disagree. Of course, you are right in saying that the serve is
the only shot that the player has 100% control of, and therefore you should
expect the professionals to do it right, or suffer the consequences.
On the other hand, especially players with a very high ball toss, are
exposed to the effects of strong winds, over which they have no control...
On a related subject, I can't understand how opponents put up with Seles'
grunting; and some do protest. I find it almost unbearable to listen to it
on TV! This is something that has nothing to do with outside conditions, and
is in full control by the players themselves.
On another, relatively unrelated subject, regardless of the outcome of the
next few rounds of the Open, I think we have a male American winner (like at
Wimbledon) in Jim Courier. I, many times, was negatively surprised that such
a seemingly intelligent guy could play such a one-dimensional game, when he
was the top pro.
As commentator I find him excellent, offering thoughtful comments and
insights into the match at hand, without endless babbling of statistics from
previous tournaments, and he has the good sense of (mostly) shutting up
while the ball is in play. Mac, the older, knows his stuff, too, but he is
so full of...Mac. Mac, the younger, was also knowledgeable and agreeable
earlier, but now sounds more and more like a 'spin-control' USTA politician.
Agree or disagree?
