[tennisbiz] Re: Equal Pay
Michael Spencer seeks to gauge different opinions on the "equal pay" issue.
I admit that my offering is tongue in cheek, but the variety of views seems
be based on emotion as well as reason. Here are some examples:
The Bean Counter Aspect
Tennis is like assembly line work. Each worker should get the same as
everyone else doing the same job. Those who work longer should get more
(5-set matches versus 3-set matches).
The Skill Level Evaluation
Some players are more skillful than others. The best women players cannot
compete with the top 100 men. The better players should be paid more.
The Tennis Business Analysis
Tennis has become less of a sports competition and more of a business. If
the money is coming from the fans who want to see the women play, then the
women should receive at least as much as the men if not more, based on the
"gate."
The Tennis Entertainment Comparison
Tennis is now entertainment and can be measured as such. Compare the viewer
ratings between the men's and women's matches and make the remuneration
proportional.
The Golden Goose Approach
Let's change a lot of things in the game even it ruins tennis.
The Ostrich Methodology
If it ain't broke don't fix it.
The Animal Farm Assertion
All tennis players are equal, but some are more equal than others. Prettier
ones should get twice as much but pay them with endorsements.
