[tennisbiz] Re: In need of some advice...
I would suggest looking this person straight in the eye and asking them what
they believe they can do to improve their footwork. I would suggest that
there are two ways to approach it. One...you can work on improving some
areas such as anticipation, reading an opponent, etc. and two, if this
person is truly interested in being faster to the ball and improving foot
work...he must consider a weight loss program. It's merely that
simple...370 lbs and 5'11" will only move so fast (or slow)...
I would also support this person in helping them improve their "foot work"
but make sure that they clearly understand that losing weight is what will
get them what they want. I wouldn't candy coat it because that's not
helping him...I would be straight and direct about it...letting him really
answer the questions and saying what is so patently obvious in terms of what
he REALLY needs to do to improve his footwork. As has been mentioned in
other posts...I would also feel good about this conversation because this
mans life is at stake and would appeal to that aspect.
Good luck...it may not be easy, especially if his reaction is a resistant
one...and personally, I would rather be honest and lose the student than
lead him down a path that may not be safe.
I wonder how much footwork does he have right now? What's his current
status in terms of ability to play tennis?
