[tennisbiz] Re: In need of some advice...
I may have missed this point, as I have to "drop
in" on the site and sometimes miss postings, but
as a H.S. (and former college) football coach, we
wouldn't touch ANYONE without a waiver on file
(especially for the summer camps we run).
Whether you want to require a physical or not is
up to you. If you do, I would suggest that you
make arrangements with a local (very close) Dr.
or clinic for a quick-in/quick-out general
physical at a negotiated rate (We have our kids
pay $15, which is a bargain, but the Dr. gets
additional business, which can mean excellent
income.) The Dr. says it is much better than
advertising, and the fee really only covers
overhead. He will see one of our referrals w/out
waiting and do the basics in fifteen minutes.)
You will note that the above accomplishes two
things: It takes you "off the hook" regarding the
weight issue and protects you in case of a
"negligence" case.
As for the first lesson, I would say that if the
person signs the waiver---a requirement for
anyone who takes personal lessons--- you can give
an intro lesson focusing on tennis and not worry
about other physical problems. But make sure that
the person agrees to bring the physical form (the
Dr. will provide you with blanks) before the next
session. Then if the person brings up the weight
issue, you can incorporate that into your stroke,
movement teaching. If not, then just work with
the person as you would with anyone out of the
"mainstream"---young children, those with chronic
problems, etc.
