I agree with the reasons given for the demise of
S & V. Also, remember simple physics provides
another answer. As state, Newton's third law
comes into play. First, the ball reaches the
returner faster, giving the server less time to
get to his set mid-position. Secondly, the ball
can be returned more sharply by simply deflecting
it at an angle with very little motion, merely
wrist snaps. Also, the development in shoe
construction has allowed a greater increase in
lateral movement. Straight forward is less
crucial.
Remember that many of the serve & volleyers of
recent vintage (McEnroe, Becker, Edberg
(especially) didn't S & V on big serves, but used
kick serves to prevent someone from returning by
just gettting the racquet head in front of the
ball and providing them more time to get closer
to the net. Then they would slip a hard one past.
Just a few thoughts.
