[tennisbiz] Re: Line calls and pressure
Since one area regarding why juniors give bad line calls has not been
mentioned, I thought the area of pressure should be noted. These juniors
who play
tournament tennis are truly under great pressure. First of all their parents
have spent big bucks in order for them to play tennis--Lessons, rackets,
clothes, traveling, hotels, Tournament fees... You name it. Ten thousand
a year is
not unusual. No wonder many juniors feel the pressure--the pressure of being
good enough to get a scholarship, to win those points to qualify for
the next
level, to qualify for free equipment. Many Americans are affected by the
instant gratification factor. They are looking for a quick return for
their time,
money and emotional investments. This also creates additional pressure. I
have seen too many young people with burn out due to pressure. It is not
surprising that when it comes to making a line call, many juniors focus
on the line
instead of the ball. If it is close, it definitely is in their favor.
Rankings, money, winning, scholarships--the "love of the game" for many
becomes second
choice. Parents and coaches should recognize the aspect of pressure
in tennis
and help their junior deal with it. Roving umpires are good. Pressure
tends
to cause cheating. They understand that word! No one wants that reputation.
