[tennisbiz] Stopping student from leaning in too early on serve
I teach a 13-year-old, 6-foot tall boy who was starting to serve quite
well until, after a few weeks away this summer, he developed a tendency
to lean forward too early on his serve. When attempting a hard,
half-topspin/half-slice serve with a continental grip, he tosses to the
right height, but he leans forward so early, he ends up having to pull
the ball forward from behind himself. The result is a slow ball and a
strained shoulder. I've tried every trick I know to change this new
habit (tossing more and less forward, serving without leaning in at all,
etc.), but he keeps reverting back to it. He leans in much too early on
roughly 3/4 of his serves, and he can tell when he has and hasn't. This
is one of the stranger problems I've seen. One never knows which idea
will click with a student, so any suggestions, however odd, will be
welcome.
