[tennisbiz] Re: Stopping student from leaning in too early on serve
Hi : when I teach the serve I first get the student to
see that the serve is done not with arm but with the
whole body movement. I will stand pretty much flat
footed the hold the racket by just using the
thumb, index, and middle finger to show how I can hit a
ball and generate such speed with just turning my
body. Using very minimum arm muscles
After that I will get the student to see how the "new"
service motion is a lot like a basketball jump-shot.
Where the feet starts apart then comes together just
to rise up off the ground to re-lease and pronate.
I think if you can inject this thought to your student
you can fix that over-lean. The jumpshot in
basketball, is again about timing and easiness of the
balanced movement.A good jumpshot is not forced and so
is a good serve. This is why Pete S. has had such a
longevity with his service game,where-as those guys
who tend to force their serve, are burnt out so fast
IE:Rafter.I hope this helps a bit ...KAL
