[tennisbiz] Re: tennis photos
Good question Miguel.
Many of the tournaments have staff photographers that make some of
their photos available to the media free of charge as long as
appropriate attribution is given. Check out the tournament's web site
(we list them all each month in our newsletter) and if you don't see
any information on it in the media section of the site, contact the
tournament and ask.
Another alternative is to find freelance photographers that are
photographing the event anyway, and make a package deal with them to
use their photos for the event.
We have lately been having photographers at a lot more events, and
some of the work they have been doing has been truly outstanding. We
would gladly share the photography with you when we cover an event in
return for you helping to cover a share of the costs. It isn't
cheap... doing a one week event usually runs at least $1000 per
person ($2000+ total for a photographer and reporter) in
out-of-pocket expenses, plus salary and overhead, which are even
more. Finding sponsors that will cover those costs is an ongoing
challenge for us... our readers LOVE the live event coverage and
photography, but it is too expensive to do it often unless you are
very large and have extensive advertising support or distribution
(like ESPN or Reuters or AP). We are continually working to try to
build relationships with some of the major tennis advertisers so we
have the resources to do what our readers want in return for giving
exposure to those brands. Those that have sponsored our coverage in
the past have usually been extremely pleased with the results.
