Tony, the basic theory is that if one approaches down the line, then one has
more time to cover the angles (get to a better net position) for the passing
shot - something that might be more difficult if one approaches cross-court.
However, there really should not be a hard and fast rule, as it depends on
the situation i.e. where the opponent is, and the strengths and weaknesses
of the player approaching.
