  Bob,
    For an A/C powered Ball Machine with ALL the desirable attributes
players of all skill levels can grow with, there is none better than the
Lob-Ster 401 w/spin adapter. I don't know if there is any data comparing it
to other brands out there but I can assure you Lab-Ster has the
dependability, and simplicity you require. Without all the moving parts of
most of the machines out there, there is very little that can go wrong ( or
can be damaged by carelessness ).
  And the best thing is...It is well under $1K even with it's few options
