Note to Randal May--
I hope you don't give up on them but instead clearly let them know how they 
are disappointing you. Teaching tennis to youths, in my opinion, is also 
teaching about life and becoming a mature person. Tell the students how you 
want them to respond, and give sincere individual and group praise when 
opportunity occurs.
It's probably easier for a high-school coach like myself to do this in a 
helpful way, gradually changing the young person's outlook not only in tennis 
but, hopefully, in life, as the coach can control the player's destiny on the 
team, which is hugely important to the boy. Your situation is probably 
trickier.
