I don't think this is odd at all. Having coached at the high
school level, and others, for many years, I have found that no
matter what anyone may say, tennis, like golf, is an
individual sport (with the obvious exception of doubles). The "team"
aspect is nothing more than the adding up of different
individual match outcomes.

It would be interesting to have a "team" winner in NY State,
but I see it as an ancillary event. Tennis is an individual
thing (or doubles thing), one versus one (or two versus two),
and the other members of a "team" have little, if any, direct
influence on the outcome of any other members' match.
