[tennisbiz] Re: Liability Issues - on and off court
The USPTA and USPTR provide their members coverage ONLY for on court duties
involving, " teaching, playing, officiating and/or running a ball machine"
Off court duties and responsibilities involving running, organizing,
administering tournaments, leagues or otherwise involving USPTA or USPTR
professionals with tournaments, leagues, travel, etc., must be covered by
general liability coverage.
Where teaching professionals are not certified (i.e., neither USPTA nor
USPTR), liability issues exist both on and off court. Where a teaching
professional, pro/manager, head professional, assistant professional, tennis
director, etc., is either a USPTA or USPTR active member, most on court
liability issues are covered. Both USPTA and USPTR professionals must be
vigilant in protecting their off court duties and responsibilities. It is the
off court duties and responsibilities that often provide the most
opportunities for danger.
When possible, USPTA and USPTR professionals should access USTA blanket
liability coverage(s) via local Community Tennis Associations (CTAs) and/or
local
501-c-3s set up to run and administer tennis programs. Generally, USTA
liability coverage is available through local CTAs via the USTA to cover the
CTA and programs the CTA runs. The cost two (2) years ago for a local
Bellevue, Washington CTA to secure liability coverage through the USTA was
approximately $ 350. The coverage provided liability coverage for parties
named by the Bellevue CTA
as well as all programs run and administered by the Bellevue CTA for one year.
The Bellevue CTA is a 501-c-3 organization.
Liability insurance coverage is imperative for all tennis teaching
professionals, managers and owners. It is critical to recognize and
understand what coverage you have, the coverage benefits and coverage limits.
