I designed and implemented an automated online ladder system (goto
http://www/centralfloridatennis.com/ladderrank.asp).

My experience is that, without constant 'pushing', people do not make
the effort to challenge others to play.

Systems where people are organized into a schedule of matches that have
to be played by a specified date are more successful.

I have been considering combining the two ideas and implementing a
system of assigning ladder matches. I have been reluctant to do so up to
now because I still believe that a ladder system should provide a means
for people to play who and when they want.

Perhaps charging for 'membership' would also assist to generate
enthusiasm as people tend to be more motivated when they feel that they
have to get 'value' from an investment of cash!
