[tennisbiz] Gut versus synthetic
I don't understand it when various people state that gut is less durable
than synthetic. I have a 14 year old playing that hits the ball very
hard and with spin. He does use an Head i.prestige mid which has a
dense sting pattern, but gut in the mains (17 gauge Uniquegut in the
mains and Cayman 17 Synthetic in the crosses) last longer than most
synthetics. And you get the added benefit of the gut being easier on
the elbow and shoulder. Cost - about $12-15 per string job ( I string
the racquets on a Babolat Star 3).
The improved durability and less chance of injury make it very
worthwhile. Moisture is the enemy and I coat each string job with clear
shoe polish and provide my some pure synthetic strung racquet in case of
wet weather.
Bottom line - consider gut.
