I agree with Andrew Sharpe. For a 10-12 year old, gut is too expensive (over
$30.00) and vulnerable to weather (especially rain and sun) and grit (like in
clay). You will have to replace it twice as much as synthetics. There are
many "synthetic gut" strings on the market. Wilson Sensation NXT and
Technifiber NRG2, are only two of a dozen excellent products available). If
your stringer is experienced, you should trust his opinion--especially if he
is certified. The US Racket Stringers Assn. has access to extensive research
and feed back from their members world wide.
