[tennisbiz] Re: Equal Pay
Joe Rill may have his tongue in cheek ... but his head is in the right
place. Equal pay, just like most issues, can be dissected a thousand ways.
However, one important aspect of pro tennis drives our final decision.
All sports is entertainment. Just like Hollywood is filled with the
best-looking actors and actresses, pro sports is filled with the best
athletes. We don't care much about watching two hacks on a public tennis
court but will shell out big bucks to watch the world's best at a Grand Slam
tournament.
How come Alex Rodriguez gets $25 million a season and a rookie shortstop get
the Major League minimum? Because Rodriguez is better and will draw more
spectators. When was the last time there was a debate about equal play in
baseball or any other team sport?
If tonight's all-Williams final gets bigger tennis ratings than the
Agassi-Schuettler match, don't Serena and Venus deserve a bigger pay day?
They sure do.
But that would be a big hassle to administer. Let's just pay the women and
men the same at a tournament.
