[tennisbiz] Re: Serve &Volley Tennis
Two quick points on the serve and volley issue concerning a players psyche:
#1
All my juniors serve and volley in doubles. I require it. But when it comes
to singles, not many have consistent success. It's not motivating to a player
when they give away points trying to do something that's hard for them. Most
juniors who compete a lot have logged significant time at the net
particularly in practice and realize how difficult it is to be successful.
They also realize it's even harder to pull of in a tournament match. So, I
don't require them to serve and volley in singles. If I have a particularly
aggressive player who loves to come to the net regardless of the outcome,
then I put write development plan for that player to become a more effective
net player over time.
#2
A lot of competitive juniors watch professional tennis on TV. Many of them
use their favorite players as role models and try to mimic the pro's game.
They watch the finals of tournaments and rarely see a serve and volleyer
raise the trophy. That's got to have a tremendous impact on how they approach
their own game.
