[tennisbiz] Re: Serve & Volley Tennis
I agree with every single reason everyone has given in this
interesting forum. I like the idea that coaching is a big
part of it. Being a teaching professional at a resort and
having my students show with big and powerful swings have
given me the idea that most coaches teach muscle tennis
instead of mental tennis. Example, I had this kid from New
York, he was 15 and all he did was hit the ball hard with
extreme grips on his forehand and backhand. When I started
to work on the volley with him I had a very hard time to
get him to go away from swinging and gettting him to hit
the volley with a continental grip was harder than winning
the lottery.
So my point is, with improved raquet tecnollogy and with
stronger and better athletes that can finish the point from
far behind the baseline, with just pure and raw power, who
wants to move in for the kill, I think you don't even have
time to think when all you do is hit hard. Master strategist
are rare this days, all we have are muscle brains with the
exception of Hewitt and Agassi on the men's side and Hingis,
(is she comes back) and a few others on the ladies side.
