Regarding your 11 year old competitive student. I would suggest talking
with him and his parents to learn more about his preferences and concerns.
It may be that you need to explore and change the "culture" of the other
team that seems to place so much emphasis on "winning". If he chooses to
stay on the "lower" team, perhaps you can find matches against better
players seperately from the team. It's important to help him seperate his
self worth from his performance.Talk with the team to create a healthy
perspective about the role of winning in competition. Discuss what it means
to lose a match for them and clarify any distortions or misconceptions they
may have. Also, I am not sure if your are his coach.Be aware of your
reactions to the players both when they win and lose. Are your "walking the
talk".
