Carol, competition should be fun. If your student
doesn't enjoy a higher level of competition, he
shouldn't be pushed into it.

Everyone learns how to compete in their own way. How
one behaves as an 11 year old and how they respond to
competition does not necessarily forshadow how they
will handle it as an adult.

The situation that you describe does offer some great
opportunities for discussion - but without any agenda
other than helping him understand what he feels and
why.

There are plenty of very competitive and successful
people who enjoy simple social tennis.

If a corporate executive can enjoy social tennis with
their friends there is no reason why an 11 year old
can't.
