The fact that the mains almost always break, and the crosses almost
never break, is often due to brushing up on the ball (or most kinds of
spin, actually) across the main strings, causing these longer strings to
move back and forth across the crosses, with the crosses acting like a
sawblade.
This is also the reason that a good stringer will pull the crosses
through the frame in a U shape to minimize this sawing effect.
