[tennisbiz] Re: Wild cards
Phil,
It's sometimes true that wild cards are wildly outmatched, but it's hardly
the rule. A British kid named Barry Cowan gave Pete Sampras five tough sets
at Wimbledon last year. And Goran, another wild card, won the tournament.
Former Roland Garros champ Mary Pierce is only playing in Paris this year
because of a wild card. And, if memory serves, Jimmy Connors incredible run
at the U. S. Open in 1991 was a result of a wild card.
Each Grand Slam has its own criteria -- but the results are not as one sided
as you described.
